World Patient Safety Day calls for global solidarity and concerted action by all countries and international partners to improve patient safety.
The Day brings together patients, families, caregivers, communities, health workers, health care leaders and policy-makers to show their commitment to patient safety.
The resolution WHA 72.6 ‘Global action on patient safety’ recognizes patient safety as a global health priority and endorses the establishment of World Patient Safety Day to be observed annually on 17 September.
The World Patients Alliance is proud to have organized the most activities globally for World Patient Safety Day from 2021 to 2025, with around 2,682 events organized worldwide over the last five years.
In 2026, under the theme “Safe care for noncommunicable diseases” and the slogan “Safe care for life!”, WPA joins WHO in highlighting the safety risks faced by people living with NCDs across prevention, diagnosis, treatment, long-term management and self-care. As NCD care often continues across multiple settings and over long periods, WPA emphasizes that people with lived experience must be recognized as partners in designing, delivering and improving safer, more person-centered care. Building on its global patient network and strong history of WPSD engagement, WPA remains committed to mobilizing patient organizations, health professionals and policy-makers to strengthen health systems, promote primary health care approaches, and ensure safe care for life for every person living with an NCD.
