Health leaders at the WHS support WHO commitment to build climate resilient, low carbon sustainable health systems (ATACH) – World Health Summit 2023
In 2023, the escalating climate emergency presents an unprecedented threat to global public health, intensifying disasters and deepening inequalities. Amid floods, heatwaves, and heightened suffering, fossil fuel subsidies have reached alarming levels. The urgent plea is for the immediate implementation of strategies outlined in the IPCC 2023 report. Achieving the 1.5 °C target requires a radical 50% reduction in emissions by 2030. Acknowledging the priority of adaptation and the unfulfilled financial commitments to low- and middle-income countries, health leaders at the World Health Summit demand a shift in the global health sector. Urging every healthcare entity to commit to zero-emission targets, these leaders emphasize the sector’s responsibility to build climate-resilient, low-carbon health systems. The call extends to engagement in international climate mechanisms and joining The Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health.
