WPA at the National Cancer Congress Malaysia (NCCM 2025)
The National Cancer Congress Malaysia (NCCM 2025), held from 20–22 June 2025 at Sunway University, Kuala Lumpur, brought together leading clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and patient representatives from across the region to discuss advancements in cancer prevention, treatment, and patient-centered care.
Hussain Jafri, Chief Executive Officer of the World Patients Alliance (WPA), attended and presented at the Axios International–supported session on “The Care Ecosystem: Working Together to Make a Difference.” He shared his insights during the panel discussion on “Understanding Advocacy: What It Means and Why It Matters.”
Dr. Jafri emphasized the vital role of patient advocacy as a practical and life-saving tool in cancer care. He highlighted that advocacy ensures patients are not only treated but also heard, with health systems designed around their needs. Referring to the WHO Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021–2030 and the goals of Universal Health Coverage, he underscored that meaningful patient engagement is essential for equitable and effective healthcare.
He shared examples of WPA’s global initiatives where patient groups have successfully influenced cancer policies, improved access to diagnosis and treatment, and advanced people-centered care. Dr. Jafri noted that advocacy strengthens clinical practice by fostering trust, adherence, and collaboration between patients and healthcare providers.
His participation in NCCM 2025 reinforced WPA’s commitment to advancing patient-centered healthcare and promoting regional collaboration to improve outcomes for cancer patients worldwide.
