Nikhil Prakash Gupta

Nikhil Prakash Gupta is a Technical Officer in the Patient Safety and Quality of Care unit at the World Health Organization (WHO) Headquarters in Geneva. He works on WHO’s global agenda for patient safety measurement and played a key role in developing and coordinating the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021–2030. In 2024, he coordinated the first Global Patient Safety Report, based on data from a Global Member State survey.

Before moving to WHO headquarters in 2018, he worked with WHO country offices in India and the Maldives, where he was involved in developing India’s National Patient Safety Implementation Framework and the Maldives Health Care Quality Standards. Earlier in his career, at the National Health Systems Resource Center (NHSRC) in India, he contributed to the Quality Assurance Framework and the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) for public health facilities, as well as initiatives on WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) in healthcare facilities and Standard Treatment Guidelines.

At WHO headquarters, his work includes supporting the implementation of the Global Patient Safety Action Plan, developing patient safety standards and assessment tools, Human Factors application, and strengthening patient safety reporting and learning systems.
