The World Patients Alliance (WPA) actively participated in the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA78) in Geneva, Switzerland, contributing to key global conversations and reinforcing the importance of patient-centered healthcare systems.
Strengthening Global Action Against Fake Medicines
WPA joined partners from the Fight the Fakes Alliance at a high-level reception focused on addressing the growing threat of falsified and substandard medicines. Representing the patient voice, WPA CEO Hussain Jafri engaged with leaders from the World Health Organization (WHO), World Trade Organization (WTO), and civil society organizations to highlight the real-world impact of fake medicines on patients.
The discussions emphasized that beyond the direct health risks, falsified medicines erode trust in healthcare systems. WPA reaffirmed its commitment to collaborative action to ensure that every patient has access to safe, effective, and authentic treatments.
Advancing Self-Care and Digital Innovation in NCD Prevention
At WHA78, WPA also contributed to a global dialogue on the role of digital tools in non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention and management. Mr. Jafri joined experts from WHO, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and the Global Self-Care Federation to explore how digital health solutions can improve access and equity.
WPA emphasized the importance of engaging patients as active partners in designing digital health tools. Ensuring accessibility, trust, and relevance to real-life needs remains essential in leveraging technology for better health outcomes, particularly in underserved communities.
Elevating Civil Society Engagement in Global Health Policy
In a significant moment for global health collaboration, WPA participated in the WHO Civil Society Commission’s in-person meeting, bringing together over 50 civil society leaders. After years of virtual engagement, the meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen partnerships and align priorities.
Mr. Jafri underscored the critical role of civil society in shaping inclusive and effective health policies. WPA reiterated its commitment to ensuring that patient voices are not only heard but integrated into decision-making processes at all levels.
WHA78 reinforced the power of collaboration, innovation, and patient engagement in addressing global health challenges. WPA remains dedicated to advocating for patient-centered approaches and working alongside partners to build resilient, equitable, and trustworthy healthcare systems worldwide.
