
Dr. Joy Mugambi is a Family Physician, health systems leader, and global health advocate committed to advancing equitable, people-centred health systems. She serves as Secretary General & President Elect of the Commonwealth Medical Association, Commissioner on the Lancet Commission on the Transformation of Primary Health Care, and President of the Kenya Association of Family Physicians. A former leader of the World Organization of Family Physicians (WONCA), she has held leadership roles across regional and global health organisations and serves on the Kenya Health Human Resource Advisory Council.
A passionate advocate for patients’ rights and high-quality primary health care, Dr. Mugambi champions policies that strengthen health systems, promote health equity, and amplify patient voices in decision-making. At the county level, she serves as County Director of Health Administration and Planning for the Nakuru County Government, where she provides strategic leadership for one of Kenya’s largest public health systems, driving innovation, service improvement, and universal access to quality care.
