Working with Healthcare Providers: A Partnership in Prediabetes Care
Overview
Effective communication with healthcare providers can help people with prediabetes and their caregivers understand their diagnosis and take an active role in their care. This World Patients Alliance webinar will explore how to prepare for appointments, ask useful questions, share concerns, and discuss screening, test results, lifestyle changes, and treatment options.
Drawing on WPA’s Prediabetes Awareness Toolkit and Prediabetes Action Guide, it will help participants work with healthcare providers to agree on realistic next steps, address practical barriers, and plan follow-up care. It will also explore how caregivers can support these conversations while respecting the patient’s preferences and privacy.
Objectives
By the end of the webinar, participants will be better able to:
– Prepare for appointments using relevant health information, a list of questions, and WPA’s practical resources.
– Ask about appropriate screening, what test results mean, whether further testing is needed, and next steps.
– Discuss realistic lifestyle changes and whether medication may be appropriate, including its potential benefits, side effects, cost, and follow-up needs.
– Explain concerns and practical barriers, such as cost, access, time, or mobility, and ask for support to adapt their care plan.
