World Patients Alliance (WPA) is organizing a Workshop on Patient Empowerment & Community Engagement in Patient Safety on Wednesday, May 25, 2022 from 08:00 am – 09:30 am EST (90 min). Patient empowerment is a process through which patients individually and collectively have increased capacity to express their needs, present their concerns and take action to meet those needs in partnership with the healthcare providers. The Jeddah Declaration on Patient Safety highlights the significance of patient empowerment and engagement in the improvement of healthcare globally. The workshop will provide an introduction to the issue of patient safety and its impact on patients and health systems worldwide. It will also highlight the WHO Patients for Patient Safety Program’s role in incorporating the patient, family and community voice into all levels of health care through engagement and empowerment. The workshop participants will be updated on the World Patients Safety Action Plan and the role that is expected of patients in improving patient safety. Case studies of successful patient and community engagement experiences from countries will be shared with the participants. After these introductory presentations, discussion will be held to identifying patient safety issues worldwide and how patients can be empowered and engaged to improve the patient safety situations at local and international levels.
