The 76th World Health Assembly has begun at Palais des Nations. Geneva, Switzerland, which will run from 21 to 30 May 2023. The World Health Assembly is the decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO). A number of important healthcare issues faced by the world will be discussed at the World Health Assembly this year, which include the ongoing health and humanitarian emergencies, thus driving forward WHO’s focus towards health for all.
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General speaking at the inaugural session of the World Health Assembly said that “as we mark WHO’s 75th anniversary, we can be proud of our past achievements, but we must be mindful of lessons learned, as we transition from the emergency phase of COVID-19, and create a future where every person has access to the health services they need. This means strengthening the global architecture for health emergency preparedness, response and resilience, supporting countries on the road to universal health coverage, and building a stronger, sustainably-funded and accountable WHO.”
There are a number of other important healthcare issues that will also be discussed at the World Health Assembly this year, which include strategies and global action on areas such as women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health, rehabilitation, universal health coverage and primary health care, traditional medicine, infection prevention and control, substandard and falsified medicines, health of refugees and migrants, non-communicable diseases, mental health, social determinants, nutrition and disabilities.
