The World Patients Alliance (WPA) is pleased to announce a formal partnership with the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), marking an important milestone in advancing patient-centered care, patient safety, and collaboration between patients and pharmacy professionals.
FIP is the global federation representing 160 national organisations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, reaching over four million professionals worldwide. Through its work in pharmacy practice, science, education, and policy, FIP is dedicated to improving access to appropriate medicine use and advancing the role of pharmacists in healthcare systems globally. FIP also holds official NGO status with the World Health Organization (WHO).
WPA and FIP share a common vision of people-centered, equitable, and high-quality healthcare, with a commitment to strengthening health systems in support of Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. Both organizations aim to promote patient engagement and empowerment, improve safety and quality of care, and ensure that healthcare policies and practices are informed by patient voices and lived experiences.
Through this partnership, WPA and FIP will work together to strengthen dialogue between patients, healthcare professionals, and policymakers. The collaboration will highlight the vital role of pharmacists as accessible and trusted healthcare professionals, particularly in prevention, early detection, medicines optimization, adherence support, health literacy, self-management education, and the long-term management of non-communicable diseases.
By combining FIP’s global leadership in pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical sciences, and education with WPA’s patient advocacy, education, and stakeholder engagement, the partnership aims to reinforce patient safety, improve access to medicines, and support accountable, inclusive healthcare systems worldwide.
Together, WPA and FIP reaffirm their dedication to building sustainable partnerships at global and regional levels, amplifying the patient voice, recognizing pharmacists as essential members of the healthcare team, and driving coordinated action toward safer, higher-quality, and more patient-centered healthcare for all.
