As part of the Prediabetes Awareness & Action Initiative, the WPA will develop and share two advocacy letters addressed to key healthcare stakeholders and policymakers. These letters will support system-level action by highlighting the urgent need for stronger recognition, policy commitment, and investment in diabetes prevention, early detection, and accessible care.
The advocacy letters will call for greater attention to prediabetes as a reversible and manageable condition and will emphasize the importance of acting early to reduce the progression to type 2 diabetes and its long-term health and economic consequences.
The letters will advocate for the following priorities:
– Recognition of diabetes and prediabetes as major public health priorities
– Universal access to routine diabetes screening and prevention programs
– Affordable and accessible diagnostic services for early detection
– Stronger policy attention to prediabetes as a preventable and manageable condition
– Greater investment in early intervention to reduce type 2 diabetes incidence and long-term healthcare costs
– Patient-centered approaches that support timely diagnosis, prevention, and ongoing care
Policy action is essential to improve early diagnosis, strengthen prevention efforts, and ensure that patients and communities receive the support they need. Through these advocacy letters, WPA aims to encourage healthcare stakeholders and decision makers to take concrete steps toward more responsive, equitable, and sustainable diabetes care systems.
By engaging policymakers and healthcare leaders, WPA seeks to strengthen awareness, influence policy discussions, and promote practical actions that can improve outcomes for people at risk of diabetes worldwide.
