Prediabetes Awareness & Action Initiative

A global campaign designed to increase understanding of prediabetes, draw attention to its growing impact, and encourage early lifestyle changes that can help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.

Approximately 589 million adults worldwide are living with diabetes, and this number is expected to rise to 853 million by 2050. Type 2 diabetes accounts for around 90% of all cases. More than 75%–80% of people living with diabetes are in low- and middle-income countries, with prevalence reaching as high as one in three adults in some countries.

Prediabetes means that a person is at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It is a silent condition that affects millions of people globally, and many do not know they have it. Regular monitoring and early risk assessment can help slow or prevent progression to type 2 diabetes. For some people, prediabetes can also be reversed through timely action and lifestyle changes.

If left unaddressed, prediabetes may already be causing long-term damage, particularly to the heart, blood vessels, and kidneys. The good news is that progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes is not inevitable. With greater awareness, early detection, and practical support, people can take meaningful steps to protect their health.

Encourage early intervention through healthy lifestyle changes and structured support for people at risk.

Promote appropriate access to evidence-based care, including clinical guidance and treatment where needed, for the effective management of prediabetes.

Reach high-risk groups, including family members, to support targeted screening and early prevention of diabetes.

Empower patients and caregivers by providing simple, practical self-management resources.

Advocate for stronger screening and prevention measures within national health policies.
