Prediabetes Awareness & Action Initiative, a global campaign designed to increase understanding of prediabetes, drawing attention to its growing effect, and inspire early lifestyle changes that can help prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.
Approximately 589 million adults globally live with diabetes, a figure expected to rise to 853 million by 2050. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% of cases. Over 75%–80% of people living with diabetes are in low- and middle-income countries, with prevalence reaching as high as one in three adults in some countries.
Having prediabetes means you are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes is a silent condition affecting millions worldwide and many people don’t even know they have it. Regular Monitoring & taking a risk test can greatly halt progression to type 2 diabetes & can often be prevented. If you have prediabetes, the long term damage of diabetes especially to your heart, blood vessels and kidneys may already be starting. There's good news, however, progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes isn't inevitable.
WPA aims to stop diabetes before it actually happens by identifying prediabetes at initial stage and empowering people to take control of their health, promoting awareness, timely action to reduce the growing burden of diabetes as well as understanding it as a global threat.
The objectives of the Campaign are follows:
– Raise public awareness that prediabetes is reversible and highlight its early warning signs.
– Drive early intervention through lifestyle-change programs for people with prediabetes.
– Promote access to pharmacotherapy for effective prediabetes management.
– Reach out high-risk groups, such as family members for target screening and prevention of diabetes
– Empower patients and caregivers by providing simple self-management resources.
– Advocate universal, routine diabetes screening in national health policies.
Maintaining long-term health isn’t just about treating illness! it’s about preventing it. Routine Screening checkups play a critical role in early detection, timely intervention, and effective management of prediabetes. When combined with clear and open communication between patients and healthcare providers, these regular assessments can significantly enhance medical outcomes and overall well‑being. By monitoring vital markers, assessing risk factors, and tracking changes over time, healthcare providers can intervene proactively rather than reacting to advanced disease. This approach supports better treatment outcomes, reduces long-term healthcare costs, and empowers patients to take control of their health.
