World Diabetes Day

World Diabetes Day is observed every year on 14 November and is recognized globally to raise awareness about diabetes, its risk factors, prevention, and management. The day highlights diabetes as a growing global health challenge and encourages collective action to reduce its impact on individuals, families, and communities.

Diabetes affects millions of people worldwide, many of whom remain undiagnosed until serious complications arise. In this context, November serves as an important global opportunity to raise awareness, promote action, and strengthen efforts to prevent and manage diabetes. This year, WPA is leading a month-long campaign focused on Prediabetes Awareness & Action, highlighting the urgent need for early diagnosis and prevention.

Prediabetes is a reversible condition, yet millions of people remain unaware of their risk. Without timely intervention, it can progress to type 2 diabetes and lead to serious complications. Through this campaign, WPA aims to empower individuals, engage communities, and advocate for stronger health systems that prioritize early detection and prevention.

Why World Diabetes Day Matters

World Diabetes Day plays a vital role in:

Raising global awareness about diabetes and its long-term health consequences

Educating individuals about risk factors such as physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, obesity, and family history

Encouraging early detection to help prevent complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, vision loss, and nerve damage

Promoting prevention strategies through lifestyle changes and informed health decisions

Our November Activities

To commemorate World Diabetes Day, WPA will run a large-scale campaign throughout the month of November. A series of activities and events will be organized to inform, engage, and mobilize action at global, regional, and community levels.

An expert led webinar will focus on helping people with prediabetes and their caregivers communicate effectively with healthcare providers to ensure proper screening, accurate diagnosis, and timely intervention, including lifestyle advice and treatment options.

A dedicated blog series will document the initiative by sharing patient experiences, expert insights, and policy recommendations on early diabetes detection. The blog is intended for patients, caregivers, and patient organizations.

A dedicated awareness video will be launched on World Diabetes Day to highlight the global burden of diabetes, the importance of early diagnosis, and the need to prevent and manage prediabetes. A key part of the video will present two contrasting paths: one showing the positive outcomes of taking timely action, and the other illustrating the risks of ignoring prediabetes. This contrast will encourage viewers to reflect on their choices and better understand the serious consequences of inaction. The video will also promote patient-centered care and highlight the cost-saving benefits of early intervention.

WPA will engage policymakers and healthcare stakeholders through targeted advocacy letters, calling for:

Recognition of prediabetes as a public health priority

Universal access to early screening and diagnostic services

Stronger prevention programs and supportive policies

Patient-centered approaches to care

Global Social Media Campaign

A structured and dedicated social media campaign will run throughout November, highlighting:

Patient testimonials and expert insights

Public awareness about prediabetes, early detection, and prevention

The importance of early intervention to reduce progression to type 2 diabetes

The long-term healthcare and economic burden of inaction
